Overrturn Citizens United Democracy Cannot Survive $1.9 Billion in Dark Money
To: Rep. Edwards, Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd
From: A constituent in Waynesville, NC
September 15, 2025
I’m a working parent and small business owner in rural Western North Carolina. I work hard, I pay taxes, I vote. But every year it becomes clearer: our voices are being drowned out by untraceable money.
In the 2024 federal elections alone, dark money groups spent over $1.9 billion—a record high.
That’s double the dark money from 2020.
Over $1.3 billion of it flowed through super PACs—often without voters ever knowing who was behind the ads.

This isn’t free speech. It’s legalized corruption. It lets billionaires and corporations buy influence in secret, while working people like me can’t afford to keep up.
Worse, 95% of voters have no idea who funds most political ads they see online or on TV (Pew Research). And when the money is anonymous, there's zero accountability—even foreign-linked entities can exploit these loopholes through front groups.
This is not just bad policy. It’s a full-blown democracy crisis.
That’s why I’m urging you to support the September vote to overturn Citizens United and restore real campaign finance reform:
End dark money—require full transparency for all political spending
Limit outside influence—cap donations and restrict super PAC coordination
Return power to the people—make public financing a viable option for everyday candidates
This isn’t a partisan issue. Over 70% of Americans—Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike—support overturning Citizens United. (Source: Ipsos, 2024)
If you believe in democracy, this is the moment to prove it.
Vote to overturn Citizens United.
Stand with the people—not the pay-to-play system that’s poisoning our politics.
