Reject Mike Johnson and Nancy Mace's bigoted, hateful Bathroom Policy
To: Rep. Porter
From: A verified voter in Irvine, CA
November 24
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed Bathroom Policy Representative Mike Johnson put in place as a result of Nancy Mace's statements. The policy, which states that transgender women are not permitted to use bathrooms in the Capitol that match their gender identity is not only discriminatory but also harmful to the transgender and non-binary community.
As a concerned citizen, I urge you to consider the devastating impact this policy will have on the lives of transgender individuals, particularly children and adolescents. This policy will:
1. Force transgender people to use facilities that do not align with their gender identity, putting them at risk of harassment, bullying, and even violence.
2. Undermine the progress made in promoting inclusivity and acceptance in our country. As a member of the LGBT+ community, I am keenly aware of the ways that prejudice has been legalized in the past.
3. Contradict the principles of equality and justice that our country was founded upon.
4. Encourage the enforcement of discriminatory and harmful ideas about gender roles and identities.
Furthermore, this policy is not only morally wrong but also unnecessary. There is no evidence to suggest that transgender individuals pose a threat to public safety or that this policy would address any real issue. It is blatant showboating and fearmongering that has no purpose except to harm some of the most vulnerable people in the country.
I implore you to stand with the transgender community and reject this discriminatory policy. Instead, I urge you to support legislation and policies that promote equality, inclusivity, and acceptance for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or expression. This is a dark time for LGBT+ youth, with their suicide rates spiking after the election, and your rejection of this policy would serve as a reminder that there is some hope in the near future & save lives.
Thank you for considering my perspective. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this critical issue.
