I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage over the recent arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful permanent resident of the United States, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Khalil, a former Columbia University student, was taken into custody despite having a green card and no criminal record—an action that appears to be politically motivated and in direct violation of due process and First Amendment protections.
This case is deeply troubling not only because it targets an individual with legal status, but also because it sets a dangerous precedent that could discourage highly skilled immigrants from choosing the United States as their home. The U.S. has long benefited from attracting top talent from around the world—scientists, engineers, business leaders, and academics—who contribute to our economy and society. However, when individuals who have followed all legal pathways to residency can be arbitrarily detained and threatened with deportation, it signals that America is not a safe or trustworthy destination for those seeking to build a future here.
This kind of action undermines our country’s core democratic values, erodes trust in our institutions, and weakens our ability to compete globally for top talent. I urge you to take immediate action to investigate this case, ensure that due process is upheld, and prevent further abuses of immigration enforcement for political retaliation.
I look forward to your response and action in Congress.
