Oppose the Defunding of the Independent Social Security Advisory Board!

I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to the White House’s reported plan to defund the Social Security Advisory Board (SSAB). As reported by Reuters on April 25, 2025, the administration intends to eliminate the board’s modest $3 million budget, effectively silencing one of the few independent and bipartisan voices dedicated to safeguarding the integrity and future of Social Security.
Established by Congress in the 1990s, the SSAB has played a critical role in providing objective, nonpartisan advice on Social Security policies that impact millions of Americans. Its contributions have shaped vital legislation, improved program operations, and ensured that Social Security remains responsive to the needs of its 73 million beneficiaries. Gutting this board would not only diminish transparency and accountability but would also undermine efforts to protect one of our nation’s most essential social safety nets.
At a time when Social Security faces mounting challenges and complex policy questions, it is inconceivable to eliminate the very institution designed to offer thoughtful, expert guidance. This decision appears motivated not by fiscal responsibility, but by a broader agenda to eliminate independent oversight and restrict informed debate. Such a move threatens the foundational principles of good governance and bipartisan cooperation.
I respectfully urge you to oppose any efforts to defund the Social Security Advisory Board and to work actively to preserve and strengthen its vital role. Millions of Americans, present and future, depend on a strong, sustainable, and well-administered Social Security system — one that requires independent analysis and honest advice, not political interference.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your leadership in defending both Social Security and the public’s trust in our government’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and accountability.
