I am extremely disappointed in your choice to vote in favor of the Laken Riley Act. The act is a farce that directly subverts the due process of our legal system. Undocumented immigrants are significantly less likely than American-born citizens to commit crimes of all kinds, including violent offenses. And the federal government already has the power to detain and deport undocumented immigrants who break the law. GOP leaders have nonetheless fast-tracked the bill, as if it were an overdue solution to a pressing problem. The bill decidedly does not limit itself to “undocumented” immigrants or to “convicted” criminals either. Under the wording of the bill, legal immigrants who are CHARGED with a crime, not convicted through due process, would be detained and deported. This is a gross mismanagement of our legal system and flies in the face of our promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I hope you more carefully consider which bills you support moving forward, or the many legal immigrant constituents you have won’t be in the US anymore.
