Urge Support for Roadless Area Conservation Act to Protect Montana's Wildlands

To: Sen. Sheehy, Rep. Zinke, Sen. Daines

From: A constituent in Clinton, MT

December 1

I am writing to urge you to support the Roadless Area Conservation Act, which is currently under review in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands. This crucial legislation would permanently protect 60 million acres of roadless wildlands across the United States, including 6 million acres right here in Montana. The Roadless Area Conservation Act is a response to alarming efforts to repeal the 2001 Roadless Rule, which has been instrumental in preserving our nation's wildlands. This repeal attempt flies in the face of overwhelming public support for the rule, with 99% of 625,000 public comments opposing the rollback. As your constituent, I am deeply concerned about this anti-public lands agenda that prioritizes private interests over the welfare of our shared natural heritage. Senator Daines, the facts clearly demonstrate the importance of maintaining roadless areas. Studies show that 85% of wildfires are human-caused, and fires are four times more likely to occur near roads than in unroaded areas. By limiting unnecessary road-building, we can significantly reduce fire risk and preserve the integrity of our wildlands. Moreover, increased road construction could paradoxically jeopardize public access by stretching already thin road maintenance budgets. The Roadless Area Conservation Act is not just about preventing road construction; it's about protecting clean water sources, preserving critical wildlife habitats, and ensuring continued recreation opportunities for Montanans and visitors alike. These pristine areas are vital for our state's economy and our way of life. I respectfully ask that you stand with the vast majority of your constituents who support protecting our public lands. Please vote in favor of the Roadless Area Conservation Act when it comes before your subcommittee. Your support will be crucial in safeguarding Montana's natural treasures for future generations.
