I urge you to insist on a genuine discussion about who should lead the Democratic Caucus. We should not simply assume that Hakeem Jeffries will continue as Leader. Jeffries has repeatedly positioned himself at odds with important priorities of Democratic voters, including Medicare for All, conditioning or ending unconditional military aid to Israel, and abolishing ICE. More importantly, I'm concerned his approach may not be sufficiently forceful for the moment we face. The next two years will require Democratic leadership prepared to aggressively use congressional oversight, investigations, legislation, and public advocacy to defend democratic institutions and hold the Trump administration accountable. I am particularly troubled by Jeffries's reported private meeting with Jared Kushner. Kushner holds no official government position, yet remains involved in consequential Middle East affairs and relationships with powerful foreign leaders. A private meeting with him—apparently without prior consultation with Democratic House leadership or the broader caucus—raises serious questions about judgment, transparency, and priorities. Equally troubling is the reported surprise that details of the meeting subsequently became public. Anyone dealing privately with a political operative as experienced and well-connected as Kushner should have anticipated that the substance of such a meeting could become public. If Jeffries genuinely believed the meeting would remain confidential, that itself raises questions about his judgment. Rather than quietly meeting with someone in Kushner's position, shouldn't Congress be demanding answers about his activities and relationships where there are legitimate questions about conflicts of interest, influence, or potential corruption? The House Oversight Committee has the authority to investigate such matters and, where appropriate, require witnesses to answer questions under oath. There are many talented Democrats in the House who could provide stronger and more effective leadership. I hope you will approach the leadership election with an open mind and help ensure that the caucus considers alternatives rather than treating the current leadership as a foregone conclusion. Democrats need leaders who will fight relentlessly for working families, meaningful democratic reforms, accountability for the wealthy and powerful, and an end to endless wars. We need to make the case for Democratic governance so compelling that voters will want to give Democrats the opportunity to govern in 2028. I am counting on you to play an active role in this process. Please do not simply support the status quo. Ask whether Hakeem Jeffries is truly the leader Democrats need for the next two years—and, if not, help find someone who is. Thank you,
