Protect universities' independence and global competitiveness
To: Sen. Booker, Sen. Kim
From: A constituent in Jersey City, NJ
April 17
The administration's threat to block Harvard from enrolling international students unless detailed records are provided is an unacceptable infringement on the autonomy of higher education institutions. Demanding invasive information on students' coursework and activities creates a hostile environment that undermines universities' ability to foster diversity and academic freedom. Revoking the tax-exempt status of non-profit universities would be an egregious overreach with severe financial consequences. Higher education plays a vital role in driving innovation, cultural exchange, and economic growth by attracting top global talent. Impeding the enrollment of qualified international students harms America's leadership in academics and research. Upholding universities' independence to make admissions decisions based on merit, not ideological pressure from the government, is crucial for maintaining world-class education standards. This unlawful threat must be rescinded to protect institutions' rights and global academic competitiveness.
