Concerns Over Press Freedom and Political Retaliation Against Journalists

To: Sen. Moody, Sen. Scott, Rep. Soto

From: A constituent in Kissimmee, FL

February 24, 2025

I am writing to express my deep concern over the recent firings of Joy Reid and Jim Acosta, both of whom have been vocal critics of President Donald Trump. These terminations appear to be part of a broader effort to silence journalists who hold powerful figures accountable and ask difficult questions. This pattern is alarming, as it signals a dangerous attempt to undermine press freedom, a fundamental pillar of our democracy. Trump has a well-documented history of attacking journalists, discrediting media institutions, and fostering hostility toward a free press. The removal of prominent reporters who have challenged his narratives raises serious concerns about political interference and retaliation against those who dare to investigate him. If this trend continues, it risks further eroding trust in our democratic institutions and chilling dissent in the media. I urge you to take a stand against this assault on press freedom. What actions are you taking to protect journalists from political retribution and ensure that our media remains independent and free from undue influence? Additionally, how can Congress hold those accountable who seek to dismantle institutions that serve as watchdogs against corruption and abuse of power? The American people rely on a free and independent press to provide truthful reporting and keep leaders in check. I ask that you do everything in your power to prevent further erosion of this critical institution. I look forward to your response and to hearing what steps you are taking to address this pressing issue.
