Restore Federal Funding for Public Broadcasting After Court Victory

To: Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis, Rep. Maloy

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

March 31

A federal judge just ruled that President Trump's executive order targeting NPR and PBS violated the First Amendment. Judge Randolph Moss issued a permanent injunction, stating the government cannot use funding "to punish or suppress disfavored expression." This is your opportunity to act. You need to restore the federal funding that Congress stripped last summer. The Department of Education alone scrapped $23 million for educational TV shows under an executive order now deemed unlawful. Local stations have laid off staff and cut programming. Families across your district have lost access to trusted educational content and news. Judge Moss made it clear: "The First Amendment does not tolerate viewpoint discrimination and retaliation of this type." The court found the executive order "singles out two speakers and, on the basis of their speech, bars them from all federally funded programs." That's unconstitutional, and the damage from congressional cuts compounds that harm. Public broadcasting serves communities that commercial media ignores. It provides educational programming for children, emergency information during disasters, and unbiased news coverage. Restore the funding now and ensure federal agencies reinstate grants like the $23 million for educational programming.
