Strong Support for Continued Funding of Public Broadcasting (PBS & NPR)
To: Sen. Budd, Sen. Tillis
From: A constituent in Corolla, NC
July 13, 2025
I am writing to express my strong support for continued federal funding for Public Broadcasting, specifically PBS and NPR. As a constituent, I believe that these organizations provide invaluable services to our communities and the nation as a whole, and their continued operation is vital for a well-informed and engaged citizenry. There are three primary reasons why I urge you to champion sustained federal support for PBS and NPR: Unparalleled Educational Content: PBS and NPR are cornerstones of educational programming, offering high-quality, non-commercial content for all ages. From "Sesame Street" and "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" which have shaped generations of learners, to documentaries like "NOVA" and "American Experience" that delve into science, history, and culture, public broadcasting fills critical gaps in educational resources. This content is especially crucial for underserved communities and provides a vital complement to formal education, fostering lifelong learning and intellectual curiosity without commercial interruptions. Objective and In-Depth Journalism: In an increasingly polarized media landscape, NPR and PBS stand out for their commitment to unbiased, in-depth news coverage and thoughtful analysis. They provide essential local, national, and international reporting that often goes beyond the headlines, offering nuanced perspectives and fostering informed public discourse. This commitment to factual, non-partisan journalism is a public good, helping citizens make sense of complex issues and upholding the principles of a healthy democracy. Community Engagement and Cultural Enrichment: Beyond news and education, public broadcasting serves as a vital platform for cultural enrichment and community engagement. PBS showcases diverse artistic performances, independent films, and local stories that might not find a home on commercial channels. NPR affiliates often serve as crucial local news sources and provide programming tailored to their specific communities, fostering a sense of shared identity and promoting local arts, culture, and civic participation. They connect communities and celebrate the rich diversity of our nation. For these reasons, I respectfully ask for your full support in ensuring robust federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which in turn supports PBS and NPR. Investing in public broadcasting is an investment in education, informed citizenship, and the cultural fabric of our society. Thank you for your time and consideration of this important matter.
