AI DATA CENTERS, LAND, WATER, & UTILITIES

To: Gov. Braun

From: A verified voter in Guilford, IN

January 17

Dear Governor Braun, I am writing as an Indiana resident to urge immediate executive action and oversight regarding the rapid expansion of AI data centers across our state. These projects are being advanced through opaque agreements, nondisclosure clauses, and incentive packages that prevent meaningful public review—while placing long-term burdens on residents through increased utility costs, water depletion, noise pollution, air emissions, and land degradation. AI data centers provide little measurable benefit to local communities, yet require massive energy and water inputs that strain infrastructure paid for by ratepayers. As Governor, you have authority over the agencies approving tax abatements, water permits, environmental enforcement priorities, and utility planning assumptions. I urge you to pause further incentives and approvals until transparent impact assessments are completed and residents are protected from subsidizing private infrastructure expansion. Economic development cannot come at the expense of land, water, public health, and democratic accountability.
