Big Beautiful Bill? I think not!
To: Rep. Turner
From: A verified voter in Cedarville, OH
July 2, 2025
I am writing as a constituent from Cedarville and as a professional who serves at Greene County’s only domestic and sexual violence crisis center. I am deeply disappointed by your vote in favor of the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” I expect my elected officials to represent my voice—not to rubber-stamp party lines, especially when those lines trample the needs of Ohioans and the most vulnerable in our communities. The bill’s funding cuts to social aid programs like Medicaid, SNAP, and student aid are indefensible. It is both cruel and economically illiterate to strip away access to food, affordable medical care, or education, then blame people for not being “good contributors” to society. If you want people to work, learn, and spend, they need to be healthy, safe, and secure. This isn’t just opinion—it’s fact. Research shows children in families receiving programs like SNAP and Medicaid have better health, higher test scores, and greater lifetime earnings. Every dollar invested in social programs yields returns for our economy, schools, and communities. If you want Ohio to thrive, you must invest in its people—not leave them scrambling for crumbs. It is equally galling that the largest tax cuts in this bill go to the ultra-wealthy. Why? What justification is there for giving more to those who already have the most, while working families and children sacrifice? The evidence is overwhelming: “trickle-down economics” is a failed experiment. Fifty years of data in the U.S. and abroad show tax cuts for the rich do not spur growth, create jobs, or benefit the middle class. They only widen the gap between the haves and have-nots—something Ohio cannot afford. The bill’s power grab regarding Rule 65(c) and the MSPB is especially alarming. Making it harder for plaintiffs to come forward—by imposing new fees and hurdles—serves only to shield those in power from accountability. This is not governance; it is self-preservation. If the goal is to silence dissent and block challenges, congratulations: you’re well on your way. But let’s not pretend this is about “efficiency” or “reform.” It’s about control, pure and simple. Every day in my work, I see the real-world consequences of policies like these. Survivors of violence depend on social programs for shelter, food, healthcare, and hope. When you cut those lifelines, you don’t just balance a budget—you tip the scales against the most vulnerable. I see a federal administration and party more interested in consolidating power than serving the people they were elected to represent. As my senator, your job is to put my voice—and the voices of your constituents—ahead of your own ambitions or your party’s demands. I urge you to vote against the Big Beautiful Bill. If you do not, I expect you to explain, in writing, how this bill benefits citizens of our district, and how you plan to look in the eyes of those who will suffer as a result. Because right now, the math—and the morality—simply don’t add up.
