Protect Climate Program Funding - Raise Revenue Through Corporate & Wealth Taxes

To: Gov. Moore

From: A verified voter in Bel Air, MD

January 9

I am writing regarding your recent announcement about cutting funding for Maryland's climate change programs. As a resident deeply concerned about environmental sustainability, I must express my strong opposition to this approach to addressing our budget shortfall. While I appreciate the challenge of closing a $3 billion deficit, cutting environmental programs is short-sighted and could cost Maryland far more in the long term. Climate change poses significant risks to our state's coastline, agriculture, and public health. These are investments in our future, not optional expenditures. Instead of reducing climate initiatives, I urge you to consider alternative revenue sources. Maryland could implement a more progressive tax structure for ultra-high-income earners and close corporate tax loopholes. Additionally, redirecting funds from private stadium subsidies and similar projects could help maintain essential environmental programs while addressing the budget gap. The environmental challenges we face require sustained, long-term commitment. Our children and grandchildren will inherit the consequences of the choices we make today. I strongly encourage you to protect our climate change programs and find more equitable solutions to our budget challenges.
