Vote NO on H.J. Res 140 – Protect the Boundary Waters

To: Sen. Smith, Rep. McCollum, Sen. Klobuchar

From: A constituent in Lake Elmo, MN

February 23

This letter urges Congress to protect the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) by opposing H.J. Res 140 and any attempt to overturn the 20-year mining ban in the Superior National Forest.  The Boundary Waters is a unique national treasure. Allowing toxic copper-sulfide mining in the watershed of this wilderness puts its water quality, wildlife, and recreation-based economy at risk. Contamination of this watershed is irreversible.  Prioritizing risky mining projects, especially by foreign corporations, over the protection of public lands is short-sighted. The Boundary Waters offers more value to the nation as a protected wilderness than as a site for industrial mining.  This will impact Minnesota and our desire to be outside and will also lead to potential water pollution which our state is already fighting with pfas. Please continue to fight this! Vote NO on any resolution that would open this area to mining.
