As a constituent in Maryland, I must insist that you vote for the SAVE Act. Election security is something that transcends partisan beliefs. It reaches across the aisle, all parties should want free and fair elections. The only way to ensure that an election is fair is by improving the security of elections. Only US Citizens are legally empowered with the right to vote. The SAVE Act will act as an additional layer of security to ensure that no ineligible individuals cast illegitimate votes, which get counted on the presumption that the person could vote. Instead of making assumptions, our elections should validate a person's eligibility by way of a photo ID. This also presents, at the same time, an additional layer which will prevent regular more standard voter fraud issues as well. Individuals would not be able to vote as a different person, as they would either not have the correct ID to present, or they would not match the person named on the ID.
Both Republicans and Democrats often accuse the other side of receiving or counting fraudulent votes. Election security is paramount to a free and fair system, where we the people should reasonably expect that there is no fraud. We cannot simply rely on the honor system any longer. There must be additional validation. Many of your colleagues have made claims that a driver's license is not sufficient. This claim is verifiably false, as the text of the Act itself states that a REAL ID (consistent with the REAL ID Act of 2005) is sufficient. Maryland, along with most states, issues REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses.
We cannot allow partisan politics and misinformation to guide our nation.
Vote for the SAVE act. Protect our elections. Protect our democratic system and our country from illegitimacy and fraud.
