I am writing as a constituent deeply concerned about the proposed Department of Homeland Security bill currently before Congress. I urge you to oppose this legislation.
Many residents in our district are alarmed by the bill’s expansion of federal enforcement powers without corresponding safeguards for transparency, accountability, or civil liberties. Recent events have shown how unchecked authority can lead to serious harm, erode public trust, and undermine the balance between federal and state responsibilities. A bill of this magnitude should strengthen oversight, not weaken it.
The proposed changes risk granting broad powers with limited mechanisms for independent review, public reporting, or meaningful recourse when abuses occur. This is especially troubling for communities that have already experienced the consequences of aggressive or unaccountable federal actions. Public safety and national security are essential, but they must never come at the expense of constitutional rights or democratic accountability.
I respectfully ask you to stand against this bill unless and until it includes clear, enforceable protections for civil liberties, robust oversight structures, and transparent reporting requirements. Minnesotans deserve security that is both effective and accountable.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your service to our district. I look forward to your public opposition to this legislation.
