The “One Big Beautiful Bill” (sic) not only failed to renew the Affordable Care Act premium tax credits — it also cut nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid to pay for tax breaks for billionaires. Two thirds of Indian healthcare is covered by Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act. But the federal government has never fully lived up to its treaty obligations. Healthcare is a treaty right. And right now, more than 1.8 million Natives rely on Medicaid including 60 percent of Native children and 2 out of every 5 elders. Particularly in states that haven’t expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, ACA tax credits are keeping healthcare costs more affordable for people with low and moderate incomes.
