Safeguard due process and First Amendment rights for non-profits
To: Rep. Beyer
From: A constituent in Arlington, VA
November 12
The proposed bill seeks to terminate the tax-exempt status of organizations deemed by the Secretary of the Treasury to be providing material support to terrorist groups. While addressing terrorism financing is a valid concern, revoking an organization's tax-exempt status through an administrative process without judicial oversight raises significant due process issues. Granting such unilateral authority to the executive branch risks potential abuse and suppression of lawful advocacy. Tax exemption determinations should remain subject to established procedures and judicial review to safeguard against viewpoint discrimination. I urge you to oppose provisions allowing revocation of tax-exempt status without robust checks and balances to protect free speech and association rights guaranteed under the First Amendment.
