An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Sign Congressman Castro’s letter calling for the end of child detention

I urge you to sign Congressmember Castro’s letter calling for the end of child detention and demanding the Dilley trailer prison be shut down. The American Academy of Pediatrics has said there is no humane way to detain a child. Children are not criminals. They are not security threats. There are humane alternatives. No child belongs in a detention cell, but especially not a detention center with reported undrinkable water, inedible food, and insufficient access to medical care. I just can’t stop thinking about 5-year-old Liam Ramos in the blue bunny hat and how sick he looked when detained there, about two-month-old Juan Nicolas who nearly died in Dilley over President’s Day weekend, about 2-year-old Kaleth who stopped eating for almost two weeks, and many more. We must stop traumatizing children.
