Please support Rep Steve Cohen's article of impeachment for John Roberts. We have all witnessed Supreme Court's decline into a partisan activist entity which is now dismantling our civil rights and remaking constitutional order into something never intended by the framers. I am horrified by recent opinions untethered from facts, sound data, or justice. I am also shocked that our highest court lacks both an ethics code and the individual exercise of needed restraint. Judges and justices are supposed to avoid even the appearance or impropriety. Yet many of many of the current SCOTUS incumbents act with contempt for the standards enjoined on judges in the lower courts. Several sitting justices have refused to recuse when they should, lied at their confirmations, regularly attend partisan events, have spouses entangled in causes and agencies that should require recusals. Others have allegations of sexual assault in their records. Some have had personal debts paid by unknown benefactors, done shady property deals, or have accepted but not declared lavish gifts and favors. The long standing lack of a code of ethics is now an acute threat to to the court's credibility: we have seen that the justices collectively refuse the self-policing needed to avoid taint from ethical conflicts. Only root and branch reform and restructuring can restore the shattered credibility of our highest court and cleanse the stench of partisanship, Jim Crow attitudes and servility to big business. Until that is possible, I ask you to take all the actions available to make your disapproval known and to demonstrate your fidelity to constitutional order. Please, therefore, support Rep Steve Cohen's articles of impeachment for John Roberts. His six articles can be read in full here: https://cohen.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congressman-cohen-introduces-six-articles-impeachment-against-supreme) Briefly they are: 1.The Chief Justice allowed the Court to become a partisan force, in breach of the constitutional guarantee of a republican form of government, due process, and equal protection of the laws, and the Chief Justice's obligation to "administer justice without respect to persons" and "faithfully and impartially" discharge his duties.... 2.Under Chief Justice Roberts' stewardship, the Court systematically preferred the powerful over the people, undermining the notions of popular sovereignty, representation, and democracy at the heart of a constitutional republic. Taken together, Chief Justice Roberts led the Court to license a system of political exclusion that could entrench minority rule at the expense of the will of the people - a grave violation, with incalculable damage, to participatory democracy enshrined in our Constitution. 3.Chief Justice Roberts violated his oath to "do equal right to the poor and the rich" by endorsing a corrupt campaign finance system that privileges the wealthy at the expense of all other citizens. 4.Chief Justice Roberts violated the Constitution of the United States and his Judicial Oath by usurping Congress's legislative role and exempting the President of the United States from criminal liability for illegal conduct. In placing a single person above the law, Chief Justice Roberts breached his oath to "administer justice without respect to persons." 5. Chief Justice Roberts's leadership of the Court is marked by the Court's arbitrary, unexplained, and inconsistent decisions that violate the Constitutional protections of the parties. 6. Chief Justice Roberts violated his ethical and statutory obligations by failing to fully report assets on his financial disclosures and refusing to recuse himself from cases that presented perceptions of a conflict of interest. While on the bench adjudicating some of the most sensitive matters, Jane Sullivan Roberts, the Chief Justice's spouse, was being paid millions of dollars to recruit attorneys by the very firms litigating before the Court. This conduct directly violates 28 U.S.C. § 455. In my view, article 6 alone meets the standard of a high crime or misdemeanors that warrants removal from office. Please declare your support for these articles and see to the impeachment and removal of Justice Roberts. Fidelity to your own oath to the constitution requires this.
