I recommend that you move forward with redistricting our state’s Congressional delegation this year and don’t wait until the next US census in 2030. Currently Florida has 20 Republican members of the House and 8 Democrats. In the 2024 election Floridians voted 56% Republican and 43% Democrat. This would make a fair and equitable Congressional delegation from Florida be 16 Republican representatives and 12 Democratic representatives.
We should also reflect the racial and ethnic variation in the state. Florida’s people are about 50% Non-Hispanic White, 27% Hispanic/Latino, 15% African American, 3% Asian, 0.4% Native American, and 3.7% multiracial. This would lead to half of the delegation being non-Hispanic White (14), one-quarter Hispanic/Latino (7), 15% African-American (4), and 3 being Asian, Native American, or multiracial people. Our current delegation is 20 white people, 4 Hispanic/Latino people, and 4 African-American people. Districts should be drawn so that more Hispanic/Latino people and more Asian, Native American, and multiracial people are likely to be elected by the voters.
Let’s reflect Florida in our Congressional delegation. Because we vote at about 56/43%, it would be good if one of our Senators was a Democrat and one a Republican, but of course that decision is up to the voters directly and state-wide.
Please let me know how you plan to proceed and how districts are drawn currently regarding geographic boundaries.
