Oversight after Jan. 24 Minneapolis killing during federal immigration operation
To: Rep. Amodei
From: A constituent in Carson City, NV
January 26
I’m a constituent in Carson City, and I’m writing to urge immediate congressional oversight and accountability following the most recent killing involving federal immigration enforcement in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026, when Alex Pretti (37) was fatally shot during an operation/protest involving federal agents.
I’m also alarmed because this follows another disputed fatal shooting in Minneapolis earlier this month involving Renee Good, intensifying concerns about rules of engagement, coordination with local authorities, and transparency around federal immigration enforcement actions.
I’m asking you to take specific actions:
1. Publicly call for an independent investigation (DOJ/OIG) into the January 24 killing, including preservation of all video, radio traffic, reports, and any body-worn camera footage.
2. Hold or request oversight hearings on ICE/DHS use-of-force, deployment practices, and chain-of-command decision-making in domestic operations—especially when civilians are present and local officials raise concerns.
3. Demand transparent reporting: clear public release of timelines, policies invoked, and after-action reviews for fatal force incidents; plus regular reporting to Congress on use-of-force and deaths connected to operations and detention.
4. Support legislative safeguards that strengthen accountability for federal law enforcement actions (including mandatory body-worn cameras where feasible, standardized de-escalation requirements, and stronger independent review for fatal incidents).
Please let me know (a) what steps you will take, (b) what information your office can obtain from DHS/ICE, and (c) whether you will support oversight hearings or legislation to reduce the risk of further loss of life.
Thank you for your time and service
