As a social worker supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and those transitioning into housing, I see firsthand the life-saving impact of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and similar resources. Many of the people I serve enter housing with no income at all—cutting this vital energy assistance would not only put their stability at risk but could also endanger lives during extreme heat or cold.
No one should have to choose between heating their home and buying food, or risk hypothermia and heatstroke simply because they can’t afford utilities. Energy assistance is not a luxury—it’s a basic necessity, especially for households already fighting to rebuild their lives.
Please, do everything in your power to protect and preserve this essential program. The health and safety of our most vulnerable neighbors depend on it.
