Designate schools as sanctuaries, protect all students' learning.
To: Rep. Self, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

The recent incidents involving immigration enforcement agents attempting to enter Los Angeles Unified School District elementary schools are deeply concerning. Schools should be safe havens for all students, regardless of immigration status. Allowing federal agents to conduct immigration enforcement activities on campus creates an atmosphere of fear and anxiety that is detrimental to learning. These actions undermine the core purpose of schools as nurturing environments focused on education. It is imperative that clear policies be established to protect the rights and well-being of all students. Schools must be designated as sensitive locations where immigration enforcement is prohibited, as was the case under previous federal guidance. Children should never have to worry about the threat of detention or deportation when they step onto campus. Their right to an education free from such disruptions and traumatic experiences must be safeguarded. Decisive action is needed to prevent further incidents like these from occurring and to reassure families that schools are sanctuaries. Robust policies shielding schools from immigration enforcement activities are essential to upholding the principle that every child, regardless of immigration status, has access to a safe and supportive learning environment. Protecting this fundamental right should be a top priority.
