I am writing to urge you to support comprehensive investigations into potential foreign interference in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, with prosecution of any individuals or entities found to have violated election laws.
Recent revelations about election security vulnerabilities demand that we examine past elections with the same scrutiny. If an NSA-authorized audit could allegedly detect irregularities in 2024, we must apply similar forensic analysis to previous election cycles. The 2016 election occurred amid documented Russian interference efforts, and questions about the integrity of our electoral systems have persisted through multiple cycles.
The connection between foreign actors and American political campaigns deserves thorough investigation. Reports indicate that major campaign contributors have maintained communications with foreign adversaries for extended periods. In one case, a significant donor had been communicating with Putin for over two years while simultaneously funding political campaigns and controlling major communication platforms. Russian troops reportedly gained access to American satellite technology during this period.
Election interference investigations must examine not just direct vote manipulation but also the leverage used to influence political outcomes. Recently unsealed Senate Finance Committee documents reveal that suspicious activity reports were filed in 2019 warning the administration of potential criminal networks involving powerful financial institutions. These warnings appear to have been ignored rather than investigated.
I am specifically requesting that you support legislation to establish an independent commission with subpoena power to investigate the 2016 and 2020 elections. This commission should have access to intelligence agency findings, financial records of major campaign contributors, and communications between American political figures and foreign governments. Any evidence of criminal activity must be referred to the Department of Justice for prosecution.
Our democracy cannot function if election interference goes uninvestigated and unpunished. The American people deserve to know whether our elections have been compromised and to see accountability for anyone who violated election laws.
