Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you once again to oppose the Republican voter suppression bill, the SAVE Act.
This is potential law which could cause a lot of people to lose their right to vote.
Whenever anyone moves or reregisters for voting, it would require that the person to physically come in with a document specifying citizenship.
There are only really 3 documents that qualify.
-Enhanced Drivers Licenses (only 5 states have them and they are opt in)
-Birth Certificate
-US Passport
REAL ID licenses DO NOT COUNT BECAUSE THEY DON'T STATE CITIZENSHIP!
Anyone who changed their name for whatever reason (MARRIAGE, GENDER IDENTIFICATION, ADOPTION) would not match their Birth Certificate.
This also affects those with Native American IDs as well as Military IDs.
If you’re elderly it can be extremely difficult to obtain documentation on your birth.
One example I know about personally:
A close friend was born out of the country with US citizenship through her father. She was registered at the Consul legally but still had to get another FS-250 because while trying to change an ID a few years ago, a person who was prejudiced at her being born out the country (verbally humiliated her in public), refused her documents (even though they were legal) as being too old.
She lost her ID and right to vote for over 6 months (could not see a new doctor because of lack of ID) because I had to get another copy of the FS-250. It was extremely difficult to get documents because her parents were aged and they had difficulty communicating.
This experience proves that it can be extremely difficult to get the documentation required, because none of the documents were online because they were too old.
It has passed House last year and it is supposed to be voted on in the Senate.
Vote NO, the SAVE Act commits, rather than prevents voter fraud. It is contrary to fair elections. Thank you.
