Hi, I’m a constituent from Santa Monica, 90405) and member of Indivisible Westside Los Angeles.
I’m grateful that the Legislature has been called back into session to “Trump-proof” California as much as possible before his administration takes power once again.
I’m especially concerned for the fate of our state’s immigrant population, whether documented or not, in the face of Trump’s promise of mass deportations. I understand that California has many laws in place already to protect these neighbors, and I fully support your effort to appropriate additional funds for Attorney General Bonta to fight Trump’s illegal and immoral agenda.
However, there is more that can and should be done to protect immigrants, as soon as possible.
Specifically, I urge you to enact laws to strengthen data protections in local police agencies and to prevent state prison staff from coordinating with ICE.
I also urge you to pardon as many immigrants as possible with old criminal records, shielding them from deportation. I understand that you have done this somewhat already, but much more is necessary to protect the maximum number of people.
Thank you for your attention.
