I write to ask you to use all of your powers to stop the assault by Elon Musk and President Trump on the CFPB and defend this vital agency.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has recovered $21 billion for hardworking Americans who were cheated by financial institutions. The CFPB was established by Congress in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis to serve as a watchdog over the financial industry and shield individuals from deceptive lending, abusive fees, and other forms of fraud. Its mission is to ensure fair, transparent, and competitive markets for consumer financial products and services. By holding powerful corporations accountable, the CFPB has delivered tangible results, recovering billions of dollars for consumers who were victims of wrongdoing.
But Elon Musk and President Donald Trump are systematically dismantling this vital agency, halting the agency's work and gutting vital staff. This coordinated and illegal assault on the CFPB must be stopped.
Now more than ever, protecting consumers from predatory practices is an essential, non-negotiable government function. Musk's plans to create a new financial platform called "X Money" directly conflict with the CFPB's role as an independent regulator. His efforts to eliminate the agency are a blatant attempt to operate without oversight, potentially enabling practices that could harm consumers for personal gain. Preserving the CFPB is crucial to maintaining a level playing field and preventing exploitation of hardworking Americans by unscrupulous actors in the financial sector--and now, in the executive branch.
The agency's independence, authority, funding, and staff must be defended to ensure it can continue its vital work of safeguarding consumer rights and holding bad actors accountable. Gutting the CFPB is plainly calculated to pave the way to unchecked predatory behavior, putting the financial security of millions at risk.
Thank you in advance for standing up for all of us.
