As I wrote previously regarding ICE actions in Chicago, Minnesota, and Washington, I believed those incidents demanded immediate attention. Now, as a Texan, I am especially concerned by the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. This tragedy raises serious questions that deserve a full and independent investigation. According to reporting by the Associated Press, Mr. Salgado Araujo had no criminal convictions, was working toward legal status, and was driving a work crew to a homebuilding site when he was fatally shot during an ICE enforcement operation. His family has called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. As Governor of Texas, I urge you to publicly support a thorough, independent review of this incident and to work with appropriate state and federal authorities to ensure that all the facts are brought to light. Texans deserve confidence that law enforcement actions carried out in our communities are conducted lawfully, transparently, and with respect for human life. Regardless of anyone's views on immigration policy, the use of deadly force by government officers must be subject to careful scrutiny and accountability. This case has deeply affected many Texans and has broader implications for public trust in law enforcement. I respectfully ask you to make this matter a priority, support a transparent investigation, and speak out in favor of accountability wherever the facts warrant it. I would appreciate your response outlining any actions you intend to take regarding this incident.
