Uphold Justice—Resist Escalation of ICE Raids and Ensure Humane Oversight
Dear Members of the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation,
I write to urge you to resist the current escalation of ICE raids and detentions, and to demand robust oversight of all ICE facilities to ensure the fair, humane, and law-abiding treatment of every individual under U.S. custody or jurisdiction.
Recent months have seen a dramatic surge in ICE enforcement actions, with quotas for daily arrests raised to unprecedented levels—up to 3,000 people per day nationwide, a more than fourfold increase over previous years. These raids, often conducted indiscriminately and without clear identification, have created a climate of fear and anxiety in immigrant communities, targeting individuals who overwhelmingly pose no threat to public safety and who contribute meaningfully to our society.
The expansion of ICE detention facilities and the influx of federal funding for mass detention risk further eroding the standards of decency and due process that are foundational to our democracy. Reports from oversight bodies and independent investigations consistently reveal inhumane conditions, medical neglect, and violations of due process in ICE detention centers, many of which are operated by private, for-profit corporations. Prolonged solitary confinement, lack of access to legal counsel, and unsafe or unsanitary conditions are not only contrary to ICE’s own standards but also violate constitutional and international human rights obligations.
Congress has a clear responsibility to ensure that ICE operates within the bounds of the law and upholds the dignity and rights of all people in its custody. Oversight mechanisms exist, but they are often insufficient or inconsistently enforced, making your vigilance and advocacy essential.
I respectfully urge you to:
• Oppose any further escalation or expansion of ICE raids and detentions.
• Demand regular, independent oversight and transparent reporting on conditions in all ICE facilities.
• Insist on the fair, humane, and equal treatment of all individuals, in line with U.S. law and international human rights standards.
Thank you for standing up for justice, accountability, and the values that define Rhode Island and our nation.
