Vote NO on HB580 I am writing as an Associate Professor of English at the University of Montevallo to ask you to vote no on HB580. This bill severely damages faculty governance at state universities and erodes the voice of a democratic and representative faculty senate, which exists to bridge student, faculty, and administrative needs. Faculty are face to face with students every day and understand the needs of the students more than anyone. Their voices are crucial on faculty senate, a body which helps create policy, proposes new ideas, and responds to ever changing campus needs. Safeguards are already in place to assure that tenured professors are not breaking their contracts and are being reviewed annually. Further interference is patronizing to professionals and experts who have dedicated their life’s work to education and research. Respect the faculty who make your universities strong. Vote no on HB580.
