Protect Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante From Illegal Shrinkage

To: Sen. Lee, Pres. Trump, Rep. Owens, Sen. Curtis

From: A verified voter in West Jordan, UT

July 12

Block any executive action to shrink Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. These lands are not bargaining chips for the drilling and mining industry, and no president has the legal authority to reduce them. The Antiquities Act is a one-way statute — it authorizes monument designations, not rollbacks. Courts have been wrestling with Trump's 2017 cuts, which were the largest rollback of public lands protections in American history, ever since Biden restored both monuments in 2021. The public has spoken clearly on this. When the Trump administration solicited comments in 2017, 98% of 2.8 million responses supported keeping the monuments intact. A 2024 poll found 71% of Utah voters support Bears Ears and 74% support Grand Staircase-Escalante — including Republican majorities. Bears Ears was designated at the request of five sovereign Tribal nations. Gutting it again would be a betrayal of those nations and of every Westerner who values these landscapes. Our public lands are not for sale. Stand against any attempt by this administration to hand them over to extractive industries.
