Private prisons

To: Sen. Moran, Sen. Marshall, Rep. Davids

Systems do exactly what they are designed to do. Our current systems that include private prison companies are designed to create prisoners for profit. If we are going to allow private prisons, they should be measured and paid according to outcome. If they put money and effort towards healthcare, including mental health, life skills, counseling and support for integration back into the community, and actually reduce repeat offenders and generations of people ending up in prison, they keep their contracts and can profit. If not, they shouldn’t keep the contract. And letting people profit from inhumane conditions should be an immediate contract end. Allowing these people to profit while holding people who are just trying to be here through seeking asylum is especially egregious. This profit motivation for keeping people in cages needs to go.
