Oppose Racially Motivated Redistricting in the June 17 Special Session
To: Sen. Harbin, Rep. Mathiak
From: A verified voter in Brooks, GA
May 15
The June 17 special session must not become a vehicle for stripping Black Georgians of their political power. Governor Kemp's proclamation, triggered by the Supreme Court's ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, opens the door to redrawing congressional maps in ways that dilute minority voting strength under the cover of "traditional redistricting principles." Don't let that happen.
Charlie Bailey got it right — this is a brazen attempt to take away the voting power of Black Georgians. CBS News has already noted that Georgia is part of a coordinated Republican push across Southern states to add GOP-friendly seats before the midterms. That's not fairness. That's political engineering dressed up in neutral language. Georgia is a purple state, and its maps should reflect all of its voters, not just the ones Republicans prefer to count. Stand against any redistricting plan that reduces minority representation, and make clear that race-neutral language does not excuse racially discriminatory outcomes.
