Reject anti-democratic HR 9495, protect free speech

To: Rep. Feenstra, Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst

From: A constituent in Huxley, IA

November 19

The House legislation H.R. 9495 poses a grave threat to free speech and gives the executive branch dangerously broad powers to revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofits without due process. Over 130 civil liberties, religious, and advocacy organizations have warned that this bill could be used to censor dissent, punish political opponents, and silence media outlets critical of the administration. The lack of safeguards against abuse means it will likely be wielded in a discriminatory manner to crack down on civil society groups. The potential for misuse of these unchecked powers is immense. It sets a disturbing precedent of the government wielding tax laws as a weapon against organizations it disagrees with under the guise of curbing "terrorist" activities. This represents an unacceptable overreach that undermines constitutional protections and democratic norms. I urge you to stand against this authoritarian legislation that will inevitably be exploited to quash free expression and dissenting voices. Reject H.R. 9495 and any attempts to grant the executive such far-reaching, unilateral censorship capabilities lacking judicial oversight. Protect free speech and civil liberties by voting no on this dangerous bill.
