Implement a federal heat stress standard

To: Sen. Schmitt, Rep. Onder, Sen. Hawley

From: A verified voter in Jefferson City, MO

July 25

Co-sponsor the Asuncion Valdivia Heat Illness and Fatality Prevention Act. This lifesaving legislation requires the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to establish a national heat stress standard for both outdoor and indoor workers. These standards becoming law are critical to protect the health and lives of farm workers and other workers who have no choice but to work during dangerous temperatures. Farm workers are as much as 35 times more likely to be killed by heat than any other civilian occupation. However the risk affects all workers as they face increased danger, from steaming fast food kitchens to sweltering warehouses to airport workers on a sizzling tarmac. Something must be done! Extreme temperatures could sicken or kill thousands of workers! Heat stress can result in heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death. Climate change is worsening this hazard, but there are still no national protections in place to protect workers. Stand for water, shade, paid rest breaks, training and emergency procedures! Support this lifesaving bill!
