Gutting federal student loan forgiveness and repayment programs would be devastating for borrowers, leading to increased costs, defaults, and a lifetime of indebtedness for millions of Americans. The proposed changes, such as repealing the Borrower Defense to Repayment, Closed School Discharges, income-driven repayment plans, and Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility, will make it significantly harder for borrowers to manage their debt and obtain relief. Replacing existing income-driven plans with a more expensive option that lacks time-based forgiveness after 20-25 years could trap low-income borrowers in lifelong repayment. Rather than impose these draconian measures, we should protect and expand programs that provide affordable monthly payments and a path out of debt for those burdened by student loans while pursuing careers in public service or facing financial hardship. Preserving loan forgiveness is crucial for ensuring access to higher education remains viable.
