Defending Democratic Norms

To: Sen. Wyden, Sen. Merkley, Rep. Dexter

From: A constituent in Portland, OR

March 16

I’m writing as a constituent because I’m deeply concerned about the erosion of democratic norms in the United States. We are seeing increasing attacks on independent institutions, pressure on civil servants, and the normalization of rhetoric that undermines elections and the rule of law. These patterns are not abstract. History shows that democracies weaken when leaders treat institutions as tools of personal or partisan power rather than public trust. Please use your position to defend the independence of public institutions and push back against efforts that undermine democratic governance. Protecting the system itself should come before party or personality.
