Condemn Federal Interference in State Election Systems

To: Sen. Gallego, Sen. Kelly, Rep. Ciscomani

From: A verified voter in Tucson, AZ

February 9

I am writing to urge you to publicly condemn the Trump administration's unprecedented attempts to seize control of state-run election systems. These actions represent a direct threat to the constitutional framework that has protected our elections for over two centuries. The administration has taken several alarming steps that exceed federal authority. The FBI raided Fulton County, Georgia's election headquarters and seized 2020 election records, including ballots, voter rolls, and digital data. Attorney General Pam Bondi threatened to pull ICE out of Minnesota unless Governor Tim Walz turned over sensitive voter registration records. The Department of Justice has now sued more than 20 states demanding access to voter rolls and election records that federal law explicitly prevents them from accessing directly. Trump has signed executive orders attempting to ban all mail-in voting nationwide and require proof of citizenship for voter registration. Federal courts have already struck down portions of these orders, finding that the executive branch lacks this authority. The administration has also implemented a secretive national citizenship database to verify voter eligibility, raising serious concerns about potential disenfranchisement of eligible voters and misuse of personal data. These actions violate the fundamental principle that states, not the federal government, administer elections. The Constitution grants states this responsibility, and Congress has consistently upheld this framework. Federal overreach into state election systems undermines the checks and balances that prevent any single entity from controlling our democratic process. I am asking you to take immediate action by publicly condemning these federal intrusions and making clear that you will defend state authority over elections. Our democracy depends on decentralized election administration that prevents consolidation of power. Please stand up for constitutional principles and protect the integrity of our electoral system.
