I need you to oppose the Trump administration's plan to convert warehouses into massive immigration detention facilities in our communities and support rescinding the $75 billion in reconciliation funding for ICE.
ICE is attempting to add 80,000 detention beds across more than 20 warehouse facilities, some holding nearly 10,000 people. ICE's acting director has stated his goal is treating people "like Amazon Prime, but with human beings." This is inhumane and unacceptable. Communities across the country, both Republican and Democratic, are successfully blocking these facilities because they strain local resources and infrastructure without providing economic benefits.
The reconciliation bill delivered $191 billion above annual appropriations for immigration enforcement while slashing nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid spending. Following ICE's deadliest year in decades, it's clear that granting this funding was a mistake. Nearly two-thirds of Americans disapprove of how ICE enforces immigration laws.
I want you to support H.R. 7346, the Drain ICE Act, and efforts in DHS appropriations negotiations to rescind the $75 billion. Additionally, support legislation requiring state and local consent before DHS opens new detention centers. Our communities should not be forced to facilitate mass detention operations that lack public support and harm our neighbors.
