I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I'm writing as your constituent to express my strong opposition to the rescission bill currently in Congress. As someone who cares about America's role in the world and our commitments to helping those in need, I'm deeply concerned about the proposed cuts to international aid and other vital programs like public broadcasting.
These rescissions would undermine programs that not only save lives abroad but also advance American interests and values globally. International aid helps build stability in regions where instability can lead to conflicts that eventually require much more expensive military interventions. It's also a key tool for American diplomacy and influence, for relatively little cost to us.
The timing of these cuts is particularly troubling. With ongoing humanitarian crises around the world, pulling back on our commitments sends the wrong message about American leadership. Other countries are watching, and stepping back now could damage relationships we've spent decades building.
I'm also concerned about the precedent this sets for how Congress handles already-approved funding. When programs are authorized and funded through the normal legislative process, constantly revisiting those decisions creates uncertainty that makes it harder for agencies and organizations to plan effectively, run their programs, and hire and keep skilled staff.
Instead of cutting these important programs, I urge you to oppose this rescission bill and work toward solutions that maintain America's humanitarian commitments while addressing any legitimate budget concerns through the regular appropriations process.
Thank you for voting against this rescission request.
