Restore Full Funding for FoodNet to Protect Public Health

To: Sen. Blumenthal, Sen. Murphy, Rep. DeLauro

From: A constituent in Guilford, CT

September 10, 2025

I am deeply concerned about the recent cuts to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) program. As of July 1, this critical food safety initiative has been severely reduced due to insufficient funding, now monitoring only two foodborne pathogens instead of eight. This drastic reduction in surveillance poses a significant threat to public health across our nation. FoodNet has been instrumental in tracking and preventing foodborne illnesses, which affect millions of Americans each year. By cutting the program's scope from eight pathogens to just Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and Salmonella, we are leaving ourselves dangerously vulnerable to outbreaks from other harmful bacteria and viruses. This funding cut will have far-reaching consequences. State public health departments rely on FoodNet data to identify and respond to foodborne illness outbreaks quickly. Without comprehensive surveillance, their ability to protect our communities is severely compromised. The result could be more widespread and prolonged outbreaks, leading to increased hospitalizations and potentially preventable deaths. Moreover, this decision undermines years of progress in food safety. FoodNet's data has been crucial in shaping policies and practices that have made our food supply safer. Limiting its scope jeopardizes future improvements and may even lead to a regression in food safety standards. I urge you to take immediate action to restore full funding for the FoodNet program. The health and safety of your constituents depend on robust foodborne illness surveillance. Please work with your colleagues to allocate the necessary resources to reinstate monitoring for all eight pathogens. This is not just a matter of public health; it's an essential investment in our nation's well-being and economic stability. Time is of the essence. Every day that passes with reduced surveillance increases the risk of undetected outbreaks. I implore you to prioritize this issue in upcoming budget discussions and push for emergency funding if necessary. The cost of inaction could be measured in lives lost and an overburdened healthcare system. Let's not wait for a crisis to recognize the value of this critical program.
