I am writing to express my strong opposition to Senate Bill 2, which seeks to establish a school voucher program in Texas. As a concerned constituent and advocate for equitable education, I believe this bill would have devastating consequences for our public school system and the students who rely on it. Senate Bill 2 would divert critical public funds away from our already underfunded public schools and redirect them to private institutions. This approach has been proven to exacerbate inequities in education, particularly for marginalized communities. Private schools, which are not held to the same accountability standards as public schools, often engage in discriminatory practices that exclude disabled students, low-income families, and Black and Brown children. By funneling public dollars into these institutions, we are effectively subsidizing exclusion and inequality. Furthermore, voucher programs have been shown to increase the cost of public education, leaving fewer resources for the students who need them most. This creates a vicious cycle where underfunded public schools struggle to meet the needs of their students, while private schools cherry-pick who they admit. The result is a system that prioritizes profit over the well-being and future of our children. Texas should be investing in our public schools, not dismantling them. Our public education system is the cornerstone of our democracy, providing every child—regardless of their background—with the opportunity to succeed. Senate Bill 2 undermines this principle and threatens to leave behind the most vulnerable members of our community. I urge you to stand against Senate Bill 2 and instead support policies that strengthen our public schools, ensure equitable funding, and provide every child with access to a high-quality education. Our children deserve better than a system that prioritizes private interests over their futures. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
