I am very concerned about the “Big Beautiful Bill” and its plan to cut science and research funding. The NIH and NSF have traditionally enjoyed bipartisan support because these research agencies are recognized as drivers of innovation and progress. NIH funding has been demonstrated to return its investment back to the economy several times over. The proposed cuts especially affect trainees. Under the proposed budget, NSF would fund only 30% of the graduate students and 18% of the postdoctoral trainees that it currently funds. These cuts rob from our future by hurting the youngest generation of junior researchers who will contribute to our scientific infrastructure in the decades to come. The cost savings provided by these cuts are modest and yet the bill still blows up the deficit through its tax cuts that primarily reward the wealthiest. This is irresponsible and shortsighted and will hurt Ohio in both the short and long-term.
