Reinstate firefighter safety programs to protect our heroes

To: Sen. Moreno, Rep. Joyce, Sen. Husted

From: A constituent in Eastlake, OH

April 26

The administration's decision to lay off nearly all federal employees investigating firefighter fatalities and the causes of cancer cases among firefighters is deeply concerning. As the son of a fallen firefighter, I understand the profound impact these tragedies have on families and communities. Dismantling programs aimed at preventing future line-of-duty deaths and addressing occupational health risks faced by firefighters shows a disregard for their well-being and sacrifice. The Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program plays a vital role in learning from tragic incidents and implementing safety measures to protect the lives of those who risk everything to serve others. Halting the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer study is equally alarming, as it represents a lost opportunity to improve our understanding of the elevated cancer rates affecting this profession and develop preventative strategies. I urge you to reconsider these reckless cuts and prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of our nation's firefighters. They deserve our utmost support and gratitude, not the elimination of programs designed to safeguard their lives and address occupational hazards. Reinforcing these crucial initiatives is not only a moral imperative but also an investment in the brave individuals who selflessly serve our communities.
