Reassessing U.S. Military Commitment in the Middle East

To: Sen. Young, Sen. Banks, Rep. Spartz

March 19

I am writing to urge a fundamental reassessment of U.S. military and financial involvement in the Middle East, particularly in relation to our alliance with Israel. For decades, the United States has committed vast resources—both in taxpayer funding and in the lives of American service members—to conflicts in this region. This ongoing engagement demands clear justification rooted in direct American interests. That justification is no longer evident. Members of my generation were already sent to fight and die in wars tied to instability in this region. I do not accept a future where the same expectation is placed on the next generation, or on my own children. The cost has already been paid in lives, and it is not acceptable to continue that cycle without a clear and direct threat to the United States. The current trajectory risks drawing the United States into escalating regional conflicts that do not serve the security or prosperity of the American people. Continued involvement increases the likelihood of further loss of American life, long-term financial strain, and entanglement in disputes that are not ours to resolve. I am asking you to advocate for: - A reduction and eventual withdrawal of U.S. military presence from active conflict zones in the region - A reevaluation of foreign aid commitments to ensure alignment with U.S. national interests - A clear policy that prioritizes diplomatic solutions over military intervention - Congressional oversight that prevents further unauthorized escalation American service members should not be placed in harm’s way absent a direct and compelling threat to the United States. Nor should future generations inherit the burden of prolonged, open-ended conflicts. It is the responsibility of Congress to ensure that U.S. foreign policy reflects the will and welfare of its citizens. I urge you to take a position that prioritizes restraint, accountability, and the preservation of American lives.
