Dear Members of Congress and Mr. President,
I am writing as a concerned American citizen to urge accountability and transparency regarding recent reports of U.S. military strikes and the killing of foreign heads of state or senior officials in Iran.
I respectfully call on you to address the following concerns:
1. Constitutional Authority: Under Article I of the Constitution, Congress holds the power to declare war. Any military strikes conducted without congressional authorization may violate the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which requires the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing U.S. armed forces to military action and prohibits forces from remaining for more than 60 days without congressional approval.
2. International Law: The targeted killing of foreign heads of state or senior officials may violate international law, including the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity of another state except in cases of self-defense or with Security Council authorization.
3. Transparency and Oversight: I urge Congress to exercise its oversight responsibilities by demanding a full briefing on the legal justifications, intelligence assessments, and decision-making processes behind these actions.
4. Diplomatic Consequences: I am deeply concerned about the potential for escalation and the impact these actions may have on regional stability, the safety of U.S. personnel abroad, and America’s standing in the international community.
I call upon you to uphold your constitutional duties, ensure accountability, and pursue diplomatic solutions to reduce tensions.
Respectfully,
M
