Urgent-Demand Accountability for Federal Agent Shooting and Oversight of ICE/CBP
To: Sen. Hallstrom, Gov. Pillen
From: A constituent in Nebraska City, NE
January 27
I am writing as a concerned constituent from Nebraska City, Otoe County. I am deeply alarmed by the recent fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by a U.S. Border Patrol agent on January 24, 2026, during a federal immigration enforcement operation. I am also concerned by the pattern of serious incidents involving federal immigration agents in Minnesota, including the earlier killing of Renée Good, and reports that state investigators have been denied access to critical evidence.
Video shared publicly and verified by credible news outlets shows Pretti holding a phone prior to the shooting, and raises serious questions about how force was used. Many observers say this does not align with the federal narrative, and local leaders — including the governor and mayor of Minneapolis - have called for transparency, accountability, and changes to federal enforcement practices.
I am urging you to take the following steps:
1. Demand a fully independent, transparent investigation into the death of Alex Pretti and previous fatal shootings involving federal immigration agents, with results made public.
2. Support congressional oversight hearings on the deployment, tactics, and use of force by ICE and U.S.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) within U.S. cities.
3. Reexamine funding for DHS and its enforcement agencies until clear reforms are implemented to protect civil liberties and public safety.
4. Ensure cooperation with state and local investigators in all cases involving civilian fatalities.
I expect my elected officials to protect civil rights and ensure that no federal agency operates without accountability. The U.S. government must demonstrate that it values human life, transparency, and constitutional protections — not just enforcement authority.
Thank you for your public service. I look forward to your prompt response and action on this urgent matter.
