The recent statements by Walmart CEO Doug McMillon about artificial intelligence's impact on jobs are deeply concerning. McMillon warned that AI will change literally every job, with no exceptions. This stark reality demands immediate action to protect American workers and our economic stability.
Walmart, our nation's largest private employer with 2.1 million workers, is already implementing AI in customer service, supply chain management, and product trend analysis. While they claim to maintain their workforce size, the composition of jobs will change dramatically. This shift is not isolated to Walmart. Accenture has already dismissed 11,000 employees in an AI-driven restructuring, and Ford's CEO predicts AI could replace half of all white-collar workers in the U.S.
The potential for mass job displacement is real and imminent. We need a robust plan to address this seismic shift in our workforce. I urge you to take immediate action on two fronts:
First, we must strengthen our social safety net. As AI reshapes the job market, many workers will need support during career transitions. This includes expanded unemployment benefits, job retraining programs, and healthcare coverage for those between jobs.
Second, I implore you to seriously consider implementing a Universal Basic Income (UBI) program. As automation and AI continue to disrupt traditional employment, a UBI could provide a crucial financial foundation for all Americans, ensuring basic needs are met while people adapt to the changing job market.
The clock is ticking. Major corporations are already deep into AI implementation. We need proactive policies to protect American workers and families. Please prioritize legislation that addresses AI's impact on employment and supports those affected by this technological revolution. Our economic future and the well-being of millions of Americans depend on your swift and decisive action.
